NORTHERN FRINGE ARTISTS: 100 OBJECTS PROJECT Northern Fringe and invited Yorkshire artists have responded to “A History of the World in 100 Objects” by interpreting their choice of object through their own practice. The initial common source of reference being the Penguin and British Museum publication “A History of the World in 100 Objects” by Neil MacGregor, and the BBC Radio 4 Podcasts featuring the hundred objects selected from the British Museum collection to tell the history of the world, beginning from around two million years ago up to the present day. The results thus far have proved fascinating, imaginative, informative, and in some cases, with a particular Northern or Yorkshire twist to them – for example: the Sutton Hoo Helmet 600 – 650 AD, inspired master blacksmith and metal craftsman John Franey to create the Pontefract Helmet 2018 AD. employing 7th.Century techniques. An excellent short film has been made of Franey in conversation about the process. This is an exciting ongoing project which started in early 2018 with an exhibition at Dean Clough Galleries Halifax, in September, then at The Art Space in Pontefract Library January 2019 and latterly to The Northern Fringe Gallery in the Ridings,Wakefield. However, we have now opened up the project to further submissions from invited/interested artists. The body of work has significantly increased and we are currently seeking further venues. Our forthcoming exhibition is to be at 35 Chapel Walk Gallery in Sheffield during the first two weeks of August
